01

San Bernardino is a hamlet of Mesocco, but in practice a village in its own right: 1,608 metres, below the pass, with the motorway tunnel opened in 1967 running under the mountain and out at Hinterrhein. It is the one place in the Moesano born and grown for tourism.

In winter there is downhill skiing at Confin, cross-country and skating; in summer tennis, minigolf, walking trails and mountain biking. Two full seasons and two audiences that look nothing alike.

And above all: the guests arrive from opposite directions. From the north, an hour from German-speaking Switzerland, searching in German. From the south, from Lombardy and Ticino, searching in Italian. A site in one language only is working half its market.

02

Two languages are not a luxury: they are half the turnover

A hotel in San Bernardino that exists only in Italian is invisible to someone searching «Hotel San Bernardino Graubünden» from Zurich — and those are guests who stay three nights, not one dinner. The same is true in reverse for anyone aiming only at the German-speaking market and missing Ticino and Lombardy.

Then there is the season, which here is everything. Prices, opening dates and offers change four times a year, and a site that needs a phone call to update stays showing Christmas until June.
